About Central Road Research Institute

The Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) is Asia's premier road research organization, established in 1952 as a constituent laboratory of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR). For over seven decades, we have been at the forefront of research, development, and innovation in highway engineering, transportation planning, and road safety.

Located in New Delhi, India, our institute operates with a mission to develop sustainable, cost-effective, and durable road infrastructure solutions tailored to the diverse climatic and traffic conditions of India and the global South. Our work spans fundamental research, applied technology development, consultancy services, and human resource development through training programs.

CRRI's expertise is recognized nationally and internationally. We have collaborated with state road departments, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and various international research organizations. Our contributions have directly influenced national policies, standards, and specifications for road construction and maintenance.

Research & Development Focus Areas

Sustainable Pavement Materials

Developing and characterizing alternative materials for road construction, including recycled aggregates, waste plastics, industrial slags, and bio-based binders to reduce environmental impact and conserve natural resources.

Climate Resilient Infrastructure

Research on pavement performance under extreme weather conditions, development of adaptation strategies for floods, heatwaves, and freeze-thaw cycles, and integration of climate projections into design standards.

Intelligent Transportation Systems

Developing and testing ITS applications for Indian conditions, including traffic monitoring, incident detection, electronic toll collection, and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication systems.

Road Asset Management

Creating advanced decision-support tools for optimal maintenance planning, budget allocation, and life-cycle cost analysis of road networks using machine learning and big data analytics.

Non-Destructive Testing & Evaluation

Advancing the use of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD), and other NDT methods for accurate assessment of pavement structural capacity and subsurface conditions.

Vulnerable Road User Safety

Designing safer infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists who constitute a major share of road traffic fatalities in India and developing countries.

Recent Breakthrough: Cold Mix Technology for Rural Roads

CRRI has developed a novel cold mix asphalt technology that allows road construction and maintenance at ambient temperatures, significantly reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This technology is particularly beneficial for remote areas and has been successfully implemented in over 500 km of rural roads across six states. The formulation uses locally available materials and requires no specialized plant machinery, making it a cost-effective solution for rural connectivity.

The technology has received the CSIR Technology Award 2022 and is now part of the Ministry of Rural Development's guidelines for Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).
