The Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) is Asia's premier road research organization, established in 1952 as a constituent laboratory of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR). For over seven decades, we have been at the forefront of research, development, and innovation in highway engineering, transportation planning, and road safety.
Located in New Delhi, India, our institute operates with a mission to develop sustainable, cost-effective, and durable road infrastructure solutions tailored to the diverse climatic and traffic conditions of India and the global South. Our work spans fundamental research, applied technology development, consultancy services, and human resource development through training programs.
CRRI's expertise is recognized nationally and internationally. We have collaborated with state road departments, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and various international research organizations. Our contributions have directly influenced national policies, standards, and specifications for road construction and maintenance.
Our Research Areas
Years of Excellence
Major Projects
Comprehensive pavement design using mechanistic-empirical methods, performance evaluation of existing pavements, and development of rehabilitation strategies. We specialize in designs for high-traffic highways, rural roads, and airport runways using indigenous and innovative materials.
Planning, design, and operation of transportation systems to ensure safe and efficient movement of people and goods. Our team employs advanced simulation models and data analytics for traffic forecasting and management.
State-of-the-art laboratories for testing and characterization of road construction materials including bitumen, aggregates, soil, and innovative materials like geosynthetics, waste plastics, and industrial by-products.
Comprehensive road safety audits, black spot identification and rectification, and design of safer road infrastructure in accordance with international best practices and IRC guidelines.
Design of surface and subsurface drainage systems, slope protection measures, and erosion control techniques to enhance road durability and prevent water-induced damage.
Comprehensive training programs for engineers, technicians, and policymakers on various aspects of road construction, maintenance, and management through our Centre for Transportation Research and Training (CTRT).

CRRI has developed a novel cold mix asphalt technology that allows road construction and maintenance at ambient temperatures, significantly reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This technology is particularly beneficial for remote areas and has been successfully implemented in over 500 km of rural roads across six states. The formulation uses locally available materials and requires no specialized plant machinery, making it a cost-effective solution for rural connectivity.
The technology has received the CSIR Technology Award 2022 and is now part of the Ministry of Rural Development's guidelines for Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).
CRRI successfully hosted the 5th International Conference on Sustainable Road Infrastructure (ICSRI 2023) with participation from 35 countries. The conference featured 200+ technical presentations and panel discussions on climate-resilient roads.
